The Builders Hardware Manufacturing Association (BHMA®) is an organization that develops and maintains product performance standards for various builder hardware products. BHMA is the only association accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to do this and more than 40 commercial and residential standards have been authored to date. BHMA also sponsors a certification program to help ensure products like door closers perform important life safety and security functions for various facilities and their occupants.
Manufacturers voluntarily submit their products to independent laboratories to confirm that the product fully meets the criteria of its ANSI/BHMA standard. Testing occurs regularly as an audit to ensure compliance with the standard and to maintain a listing within the ANSI/BHMA Certified Products Directory (CPD).
Many ANSI/BHMA standards define different product grades for various hardware products. The grade levels represent progressive levels of performance benchmarks as outlined in the applicable ANSI/BHMA standard, with grade 1 being the highest.
